Because of the negative development of epidemiological situation of COVID -19 in the world the league decided to cancel the remaining part of 2019/20 KHL season.

The resolution was carried after discussion with all parties concerned and comes from safety considerations of players, fans, stuffs health and everyone involved in KHL championship organization. 

The league has developed a lot of scenarios of further events – from finishing the championship before April 30^th till continuing the championship in June, or July. However, at the moment, the execution of these scenarios seems unlikely. 

Some of the hockey clubs had to announce the refusal of participating in playoffs.  Besides that, foreign players might have problems with returning back to Russia. All these moments would take away from the tournament sports attraction.  Holding the playoffs without teams that won the right to compete for the Gagarin Cup would be a violation of the sporting principle.  

Holding the tournament in summer time would have reflecting negative on the next season. And in this case, all hockey clubs need to change dates of summer vacations and the dates of training camps, KHL would have to change the dates of transfer windows, change the season start date and minimize the amount of games in the championship. More than that, 18 hockey clubs already completed the 2019/20 season and started to prepare for the next season.

The total team placing will be made at one of the next meetings of the KHL Board of Directors. KHL Board Directors also will determine the composition of the participants in the 2020/2021 championship, after which the League will start preparing the calendar.
